Cervical cancer is a type of gynaec cancer that affects the lower part (neck) of the vagina, it affects the cervix that connects the vagina and uterus. Cervical cancer affects the cells in the cervix. When these cells show abnormality it can be a sign of cervical cancer. When cervical cancer is not diagnosed early it can spread to the deeper tissues of the cervix and can also affect the other parts of the body. Most probably it would affect the vagina, rectum, bladder, liver and lungs.

Cervical cancer occurs in the neck of the womb. It affects the cells of the cervix. Cervical cancer is mostly caused by certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can be passed from one person to another through sexual activity. Both men and women can be infected with HPV. It can be present for years without causing any symptoms and can be passed on to others without knowing. HPV Vaccine has been effective in preventing cervical cancer since 2006. Regular Pap Smear testing is the best way to detect abnormal changes to the cervix before they develop into cancer

Major function of cervix:

The cervix is the part of the female reproductive system that connects the uterus (womb) to the vagina. It passes menstrual fluid from uterus to vagina.It direct the sperms into the uterus during intercourse. The opening of the cervical canal is normally very narrow. However under the pressure from the fetal head, this opening widens to about 4 inches (10 cm.) during labor, to allow the birth of a baby.

Who are most likely to be affected by cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer can affect women at all ages. Women who are sexually active are more prone to cervical cancer. Smoking increases the chance for cervical cancer. Multiple sexual partners increases the risk for cervical cancer. Using oral contraception for more than few years can also be a cause for cervical cancer.

Prevention measures to keep cervical cancer away:

If you or your loved one is in the age group of 15-26 get them vaccinated. When 21 begin your pap-Smear test, once in 3 years take a compulsory pap-smear test. After 65 if you have no history of cervical abnormalities stop taking Pap-Smear test.
