What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine which focuses on the digestive system and its disorders. This Gastroenterology department would evaluate the diseases that affects the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the organs from the mouth to the anus, along the alimentary canal.

The physicians who practices in this field are called gastroenterologists. These physicians perform several diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which includes colonoscopy, endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound and liver biopsy.

Surgical Gastroenterology (SGE)also known as Gastrointestinal surgery (GI Surgery) is a new specialized type of surgery that deals mainly with the surgical problems relating to the digestive system which includes organs like Oesophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Rectum, Anal canal, Liver, Pancreas, Gall bladder and Bile duct.

During treatment

Rapid advances in the field of surgery namely “Minimal access surgery” or “Key hole surgery” and organ transplantation are very closely associated with abdominal surgery further widening the horizons of surgical Gastroenterology. The advanced surgery that is performed on each organ of the GI tract would require a specialized training and skills which are taught only in a very few surgical units in the country and abroad. Complex operations like Total Esophagectomy, Total Gastrectomy, WHIPPLE’S Procedure, Liver Resections, Bowel Resections, Surgery for Portal Hypertension are usually dealt by surgical gastroenterologists with good results.
